The Métis Federation of Canada (MFC) came into being to meet a particular need: to unite Métis from coast to coast to coast and to champion Métis rights. We had a big win in the Daniels case at the Supreme Court and have continued to represent Métis in our communities and at large, but we are at a crossroads.
The MFC is entirely community supported and funded. Our board and staff are volunteer. In order to continue our mission and expand our presence, we need finances to maintain our day-to-day operations such as office supplies, website, hardware/software, etc. Should we receive enough renewals to cover operating expenses, we will start longer term commitments like scholarships, cultural events, community research, and a fund for legal consultations.
To that end, the MFC is moving to a renewal model. Once a citizen, a member remains a citizen for life, but in order to stand for office or vote in our assemblies, citizens must renew their membership to be considered in good standing.
New citizen applications will continue to cost only $60. Those who complete successful applications will be invited to join the MFC with the option to renew at the 1, 3, or 5 year intervals for $40, $90, or $125. Seniors (65+) may renew for half-price and youth members (17 and under) will continue to be free with conversion to a voting membership at 18.
Existing citizens may renew at any time. We encourage everyone to renew your membership as soon as possible, update your contact information, and to join us in deciding the next steps for our community.
